SYNOPSIS
In a certain mindset, making art could be considered to be pointless. Marcus Method, an esteemed visual artist from Sheffield, considers his craft to be quite the opposite. This short documentary offers a glimpse into the creative process, fundamental obstacles and human nature that influences his projects.
DIRECTOR'S STATEMENT
I set out to create this short documentary as an exercise in drawing parallels between the filmmaking creative process behind the lens and the visual artistry of a street painter.
As a filmmaker, I indulge in the harmony that can be found when flowing alongside other creative practitioners. Understanding the idiosyncrasies of their work and tuning into their modus operatum allows me to find a rhythm that I can match with my camerawork and editing. I let the subject on-screen dictate the musicality and pace of the filmmaking, and it feels as though the film begins to create itself and I am merely a custodian of the unity between subject and the lens.
The most challenging part of creating a project of this nature is condensing hours of footage and interview content while still retaining the authenticity of the original message. I am extremely proud of the way I represented Marcus’ methodology, and found that this was ultimately a successful experiment. I look forward to working on the next documentary project on the horizon.
